I cannot read my messages, I get a note that says "Unable to write the email to the mailbox. Make sure the file system allows you write privileges, and you have enough disk space to copy the mailbox".

that is a catch all error with many causes. First up, is your hard disk full? Do you operate with a limited user account and a disk quota on your machine?

Thanks for the reply, No my hard drive is no where near full 397GB free of 465GB and I don't have any user quotas or any limits. I set up to use Windows live mail and I can read my mail ok with that but I prefer mozilla. Cheers
