Thunderbird launches slowly after update

I recently updated Thunderbird to version 31.4 and since then TB launches itself very slowly. What happens is that when I click on the TB icon in the quick launch bar the borders of TB appear but nothing else. After about 20 seconds the rest of TB appears but until that happens I just have the four borders enclosing an empty space. Is there anything that I can do to make TB take less than 30 seconds to be up and running properly? Out of curiosity why do just the borders appear and enclose the empty space for 20 seconds?

Thanks for your reply.

My antivirus software is Emsisoft, but I do not think that that is the problem because I have tried turning it off and still get this long delay

Hello and thanks again. I did what you suggested and ran TB in safe mode in Windows 7 in safe mode and it worked perfectly. However, when I returned to 'normal mode' it was the same as before in that I got just the borders of TB followed about 20-30 seconds later by the full user interface.

TB ran correctly in safe mode with all the add-ons disabled so I have disabled them in normal mode but it has not made any difference - I still get this long delay

Try to unselect the graphic acceleration. And check if your graphic driver need updating

In Windows safe mode anti-virus software doesn't run. Make sure your anti-virus software isn't scanning your Thunderbird profile folder. Disable attachment scanning, and scanning of incoming and outgoing messages.

Hi, Thank you both for your help. I updated the graphics driver and that seems to have cured the problem in that TB opens faster now although I still get the empty frame. However, this lasts for three seconds instead of the 20+ seconds as happened before.
