Why will Firefox Not upgrade after download and install to 41.x.x

more options

I have downloaded the latest version(41.x.x) 3 times and restarted Firefox to install the software. But when I go to view what level I am at, it's still 38.x.x. If I remain on Firefox for a while I will get the request from Firefox to upgrade to 41.x.x again. When I manually try to do the upgrade, the line that is supposed to show the migration does not do so, it shows the information that is below the migration line without any upgrade line. I am currently running Windows 7 Pro and soon will upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. Any assistance you can provide would be appreciated. My next attempt will be to remove Firefox completely and then download and install Firefox again to see if it installs the latest version. Thanks.....Doug

By the way, instead of removing Firefox completely, you might try renaming just the program folder before running the new installer:

On Windows 7, it's either:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

rename to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

rename to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

When you run the installer, it should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

Otherwise, there's no reason to keep the old folder except research/curiosity.

Are you downloading through the built-in updater? Perhaps that is malfunctioning for some reason.

You can download the full installer for Firefox 41.0.2 from the following page (scroll down to your preferred language): https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

After exiting out of Firefox, run the installer and it should detect your existing Firefox 38 installation and update it.
