Why Does Thunderbird Strip Animated Gifs from message?

I noticed that on other email clients that animated gifs survive the send process and the recipient can have the benefit of seeing the animation. When I send emails from Thunderbird that contain animated gifs the recipients simply sees the alt text in place of the animated gif.

Is there a setting in Thunderbird where I can change this behavior?

Are you embedding the gif or sending its URL?
