Search engine is now boxes, not in a line going down. I need this to go BACK to the line going down with all my search engines on it. How do I do this?

Drop down box is missing with the new firefox. I need it to go back with just the drop down box of all the search engines, not the boxy horizontal mess it is now. It is really inconvenient and frustrating.

What drop down box? Do you mean the search box?

Type about:customizing<enter> in the address bar. In the new window, look for the icon. When you find it, hold down the left button on it, and move it to where you want it to be. You can move any of the icons you want from here, but some icons are locked in place.

There is also a Restore Defaults button at the bottom middle.

You can look at the Classic Theme Restorer extension to customize the appearance and restore features used in older Firefox versions.

  • You can check out the settings of the CTR extension via its Options/Preferences button on the "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" page.
  • You can find extra toolbar buttons and more toolbar settings in Customize (3-bar Firefox menu button > Customize)

The browser.search.showOneOffbuttons pref is no longer supported in Firefox 43+. You can find this feature in the CTR Options/Preferences.

  • CTR Options > General UI (1) -> Old search (experimental)

If you decide to work with the "new" design -- it was introduced a year ago in Firefox 34 and you probably set it back to the old one around that time -- you can probably find a workable workflow if you describe what you were used to doing in the old design.

For example, to change the default search engine, you can use Ctrl+Down Arrow and Ctrl+Up Arrow to cycle through your list. The new default will appear immediately below the search box.

Can't something be done by the developers? This really sucks.

Hi Ruthlilycat, this change was introduced a year ago in Firefox 34 and has been tweaked and improved over the past year and now it's final. What is your workflow for searching that is more complicated with the new design?

By the way, I learned in another forum that you can change your default search engine to a different one by right-clicking its icon.
