I often get emails with Word documents attached. Firefox opens a pane and displays the contents instead of downloading them. I have to go through extra steps to get them downloaded. How can I shut off this automatic display of documents? I have Options General Downloads set to always ask. I haven't been able to find anywhere else that downloads are addressed.

Firefox opens a file in a tab if the server sends the file as text/plain. In such a case you would have to right-click the link and select "Save Link As".

Sorry cor-el, but these aren't text files, they are .DOC or. DOCX files. FF doesn't open them in a tab, but in a pane overlying the email.

This is not about the file extension, but about the MIME type that the servers sends to Firefox.

You can use the Live Http Headers extension if the Network Monitor doesn't show the HTTP response headers for this file to check the content type in the HTTP response headers.
