Java 8 will not install in Firefox 44. It worked without a hitch until I installed 44. Java works perfectly with IE. When I go to a site in IE that needs Java, I enter without a hitch. When I go to the very same site in Firefox I get the message that the site needs a browser with Java. Java does not appear as a plugin in Firefox. I've checked the Java control panel Security tab; it's enabled for browser. I've tried re-installing both programs. I've tried listing permitted sites in Java and Firefox. I've tried every answer in the Support Forum to questions on now to install blocked plugin, no Java plugin, Java is no longer functioning. I've revised the profile list, etc. etc. But Java absolutely does not install or operate in 44. If it's at all relevant, I use McAfee Total Protection but have always used it without any problem with Java in Firefox. I tried turning off both Virus and Spyware Protection and the Firewall in McAfee. That has no effect at all.

Only 64-bit Flash Player and Silverlight is white listed in Win64 Firefox since 43.0 as it was only Flash Player that was white listed in the first Win64 Firefox Release which was 42.0.

hi QuintaLuz, that's to be expected - windows 64bit versions come with limited plugin support at the moment (only flash is whitelisted). if you depend on other npapi plugins please continue to use regular 32bit builds.

Thank you both. Everything works again! Instead of just Silverlight and Flash, which were the only plugins in the 64-bit version, Java's returned along with the other 5 or 6 plugins I occasionally use.

I have also had this problem.

I could not see Java setup window when installing Java 8u740.02 or jre-8u73-windows-i586 and could not install the latest version.

My workaround was to install jrt8u25 from the java.com older versions archive. Then updated it manually. Now have latest version 8u73 installed.

But it will not work. Java.com's Verify Java version identifies jre-8u73-windows-i586 is installed, and I can see it in Programs and Features, Programs and Control Panel.

Several attempts: Java.com's Verify and Remove Older Versions does not work. (I manually uninstalled jre8.u25 via Uninstall Programs and wanted to check that all bits of older version were removed).

The Verify/Remove prompted a java console screen when prompted to run:

Java Plug-in 11.73.2.02 Using JRE version 1.8.0_73-b02 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM User home directory = C:\Users\admin-c

c: clear console window f: finalize objects on finalization queue g: garbage collect h: display this help message l: dump classloader list m: print memory usage o: trigger logging q: hide console r: reload policy configuration s: dump system and deployment properties t: dump thread list v: dump thread stack x: clear classloader cache 0-5: set trace level to <n>

CacheEntryhttps://www.java.com/applet/JavaRemov.../launch.jnlp: updateAvailable=true,lastModified=Fri Feb 05 19:53:59 GMT 2016,length=793

But - Unresponsive Plugin message and Java crash followed (report sent). And Java does not work on sites that require it, showing a message of a plugin needed.

Tried a various fixes from 'Java plug-in does not work in Firefox after installing Java' --

1. I removed the pluginreg.dat file (which was reinstalled after restart of pc.) 2. Added property name dom.ipc.plugins.java.enabled to Firefox preferences. 3. Not a technical user so not confident to try options 2 and 3 (Create "user.js" file with preference entry and Update "pref.js" file with preference entry). 4. Disabled, tested and re-enabled all addons including Java Deployment Toolkit (DT (8.0.730.2). I have the latest version of Java installed so the suggested fix to install latest version of Java does not apply. 5. I have also confirmed that java is enabled in the FF browser via the Java Control Panel.

My original post of all this was https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1112725

but perhaps was posted in wrong portion of the forum, so adding it here.

I am hoping that someone will offer advice and suggestions on getting this to work. I am out of ideas and skill.

Other info: Win8.1 32-bit, FF44.0.2, Java 8u73-windows-i586. Puzzled about your comment, philipp, concerning use of 32-bit plugins as an alternative, because that's what I am using and it is not working.

Found that Flash Player was no longer uninstalled. Downloaded and reinstalled latest FP version, and now Java and FP working, but often getting a FP error 2004. If quick, 'dismiss all' lets flash content load and work fine, but if not quick, FP, FF browser, and error message box freezes and have to choose 'stop script' from new pop up message window, or end tasks from task manager. So, still problematic.
