Thunderbird has today installed an update. Since doing that, it is stuck on the Home page. I can't read messages, write a new message, ...I can search from there, but that seems to be all. I tried restarting with add-ons disabled (tho' I don't think I have any add-ons)_ but nothing happened. I tried Tools, Options, but again, nothing happened. So I then uninstalled it and re-installed it - with the same result.

I click on Add-ons, but absolutely nothing happens. The menu disappears and I am back on the Home screen. I may have Lightning, but I don't think I have any other Add-ons.

In that case, please shut down thunderbird and start Thunderbird in safe mode https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode

Then on the toolbar click then  Add-ons and disable first lightning if you have it. Then disable all add-ons if disabling Lightning does not fix the issue.

On the toolbar then  Add-ons and disable first lightning if you have it. then all add-ons of disabling Lightning does not fix the issue

That does seem to have solved the problem - and it is OK when starting it not in safe mode. Thank you Wayne. Alison
