Fresh install of TB 38.7 in Pinguy Ubuntu 14.04. The Folder Pane only displays alternating folder titles over alternating color background - the gray background has the folder names, but the white background doesn't show the folder name until clicked on. Have tried all the listed possibilities and then some. Any help is appreciated.

that sounds like a theme issue.

Try restarting Thunderbird in safe mode by holding the shift key when starting, or selecting the "without add-ons" from the help menu.

Many thanks! Went to the help menu and restarted without add-ons and all my folder titles reappeared.

It works as long as it's running in safe mode, but as soon as a new start-up happens it reverts. Have gone in and disabled every add-on and plug-in to no avail. Could there be an issue with the default theme?

Check the appearance tab where themes live. Given Thunderbird's default theme has not included that Zebra stripe alternating scheme since about version 2 my guess is that your distribution bundles a non default theme with Thunderbird.
