Two things that happen regularly: 1. The chatbox doesn't work, all that happens is a continuous small spinning wheel where the chat activity should be. 2. The logout drop down menu on occasion also doesn't work, same small spinning wheel appears in a very small area where there should be a drop down menu. The above doesn't always happen but it is often, mostly the chat box... and yes I've cleared cache and cookies, and no I'm not going to refresh Firefox only for it to happen again after having to put the necessary add-ons back on. Getting fed up of the Internet never working properly to be honest, it's been like this since it started.

How recently did this start?

I don't use FB often, but I do think I've had trouble with the menu from time to time when I wanted to log out. As a workaround in that case, you can edit the URL to the mobile site which has a logout link:

https://m.facebook.com/

I understand not wanting to use Refresh. To investigate whether the issue could a content blocker, please check these possibilities:

(1) Built-in Tracking Protection feature (especially in private windows).

Do you see a shield icon toward the left end of the toolbar when this problem hits? More info on how to use the shield to manage blocking: What happened to Tracking Protection?.

(2) Content blocking extensions such as Adblock Plus, Blur, Disconnect, Ghostery, NoScript, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin or uMatrix.

These typically provide toolbar buttons to manage blocked content in a page. If you make an exception for Facebook and its related servers (e.g., facebook.com, fbcdn.com), does that help at all?

Since Firefox 57 was released. It's started to work again but I don't know for how long, it's very temperamental, I have adblock plus and tracking protection is on. It isn't down to them as if so they would always stop it working. The random nature of the problem makes it difficult to nail, although it didn't happen on the old Firefox (pre Quantum) Thanks for reply.

Here's a screenshot of facebooks chat box on Firefox 58.0.2 Windows 7. The wheel would spin for eternity if I let it.
