Since about 3 days the connexion is refused with the message saying that either the mail address or the password is incorrect. I can connect via Firefox to the web Outlook.com with the "incorrect" mail address and the password.

Looking at Outlook support there is an article for users of the mail clients Outlook 2016 and Outlook 2013 wtih this same problem and the article states that the new version of Outlook requires that the user recreate their profile and re-add the account.

Using ........ outlook.office365.com gives rise to a Thunderbird error "cannot connect to server"

If Thunderbird can not connect to that server it sounds like your anti virus or firewall is blocking Thunderbird getting access to the internet. I suggest you check those things and ensure Thunderbird is not being blocked.

Are you using imap-mail.outlook.com and smtp-mail.outlook.com for the IMAP and SMTP servers, respectively? If so, it often helps to change these to outlook.office365.com and smtp.office365.com.

Same advice applies to POP: use outlook.office365.com on port 995, SSL/TLS; smtp.office365.com on port 587, STARTTLS.
