I have folders in my local folders that duplicate the ones above in my system files, like "trash". I also have some folders I do not use that I just need to get rid of. Thay are all empty.

'Local Folders' is a special mail account that comes as default in Thunderbird. 'Local Folders' mail account has 'Outbox' folder which is the global outbox folder for all 'Send Later' emails which are sent from any mail account.

'Local Folders' can be used:

  • to store emails from any mail account which you may want to remove, but still want access to emails. This is particulary important for imap mail accounts.
  • to store emails on your computer when you may need to remove emails off server to resolve a quota used issue.
  • general storage or used as archive folders.
  • used by pop mail accounts that want to use a deferred mail account as a Global Inbox mail account.

To delete any folder you manually created:

  • Right click on folder and select 'Delete'

If delete is not available in the drop options then it is either a default folder or a folder you created but then designated to be used in eg: 'Copies & Folders' as a default folder.

You could try removing folders from the profile folder. In Thunderbird

  • Help > Troublshooting Information
  • click on 'Open folder' button

a new window opens showing contents of your 'profile name' folder.

  • Exit thunderbird now
  • click on 'Mail ' folder
  • click on 'Local Folders' mail account

Each folder shown in Folder Pane will have an mbox file (no extension) that can contains emails and a *.msf file which is an indexing file. If you any *.sbd folders, these can also contain mbox and .msf files. they are created when you create subfolders.

You could try deleting these files and folders but.... Do not delete 'Unsent Messages' mbox file nor it's Unsent Messages .msf index file. This is the 'Outbox' folder.

Should you ever need to delete any emails from 'Outbox' for any reason, then you will also need the 'Trash' and 'Trash.msf files.
