Before, I could enter an URL with spaces and they would automatically be converted into %20. Now whenever I try to enter an URL with spaces, Firefox refuses to recognize it as an URL and instead makes a google search.

No URL addresses can have spaces. The internet can not handle them. Only the part after the address can have spaces as that gets sent to the site.
