The first time I start up Thunderbird in each session, there is a long delay, during which nothing can happen, while All Mail dlownloads messages - currently over 900 of them. Why does it do this, and how can I stop it downloading old messages?

Most users unsubscribe All Mail since it stores messages that are already present in the original folders. See the All Mail section here.
