Hello,

I chose the default theme in Thunderbird preferences and the automatic appearance mode in macOS. In the evening the dark mode appears automatically. If I don't turn off the machine, the next day when I wake up the computer the light mode appears normally, but if I quit Thunerbird in the evening and turn off the machine, the next day when I launch Thunderbird it stays on the dark mode, while macOS is in light mode.

the Theme is thunderbird is set by you and stays set that way until you change it. How that interacts with some apple tool for changing the theme based on the time of day I can not guess. By I would guess it is probably badly.

Hello, thanks for the answer. I chose the default theme in Thunderbird, which is supposed to change with the system theme. As explained, it works in all cases except when you launch Thunderbird, at which time the last theme is used. This is obviously a bug, which could be easily fixed by adding a test at Thunderbird launch.
