When I try to open emails with attachments (particularly large ones), TB freezes and I have to use Task Manager to close it. I also cannot delete such emails, as they just reappear again after a second or two. What can I do about this?

re :When I try to open emails with attachments (particularly large ones),

Are the attachments images ? Have you selected the option 'View' > 'Display attachments inline' ? Do those images look like they are trying to load in full size ? You will see a horizontal scrollbar appear at bottom of Message Pane. If yes, immediately grab side of window/message pane and move/shake sideways to see if it forces the image to fit to width of window.

Otherwise - uncheck/do not select 'Display attachments inline'
