Navigation - Multiple Tabs

Firefox continues to add a new tab during navigation on a website. Every selection adds a new tab rather than staying within the original tab. Trying to sign out from a website is problematic because a new tab is added which is blank and the original remains signed in. How can this be changed?

Could be a problem with an extension (maybe Open Link with New Tab).

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or if userChrome.css/userContent.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the Default System theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window

If troubleshooting doesn't provide an answer, you might like this extension.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to us regarding the issue with multiple tabs being opened during website navigation in Firefox. I understand that it can be frustrating when this behavior interferes with tasks such as signing out from a website. I'll be glad to assist you with this.

To address the problem of new tabs being opened with each selection on a website, you can try adjusting the browser settings. Please follow these steps:

Open Firefox and click on the three horizontal lines (menu icon) in the top-right corner. From the drop-down menu, select "Options" (Windows) or "Preferences" (Mac). In the Options/Preferences tab, choose "General" from the left sidebar. Scroll down to the "Tabs" section. Make sure the option "Open new windows in a new tab instead" is selected. Additionally, you can uncheck the option "When you open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" if you prefer to stay on the current tab when opening links in new tabs. Close the Options/Preferences tab. After making these changes, Firefox should keep the navigation within the original tab instead of opening new tabs for each selection. This should help resolve the issue you're facing when trying to sign out from a website.

If the problem persists or if you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. We're here to assist you.

Best regards, Firefox Support Volunteer
