Very similar to -> https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1427103

My firefox now freezes when I click in the URL bar. NO solution I have found so far other than task manager -> end task and restart the browser. Occasionally that will work, other times it will immediately freeze again.

Historically I have had a LOT of tabs open, more recently less than 20 tabs. I have never seen the issue before.

Windows 10 22H2 Ryzen 3600 32GB RAM Nvidia RTX 3060 LHR 3 Monitors 2 - 1920x1200, 1 - 1920x1080

What I have tried so far: - reboot - restart firefox - "refresh" firefox - troubleshooting mode - removed all extensions - removed some extensions - reduced tabs down to a few - tried to click in the start page search instead of url bar - turned off hardware acceleration - turned on hardware acceleration - turned off TLS DNS - using only 1 window at a time instead of 2 or 3 - waited for an hour or so and window did not become responsive

None of these solutions fixed the issue. A screenshot would be useless as the window looks fine, but the UI is unresponsive.

linked issue "zeroknight" recommended not signing in to sync? I have not tried this as one of the reasons I use firefox is for the sync capabilities.

You can remove Clipboard from the address bar choices as this new choice has been reported to cause this issue in case there is large content on the clipboard.

The location bar drop-down list can show history items, bookmarked pages, pages opened in tabs, top sites, and search suggestions. You can set what suggestions show when you enter an URL in the location/address bar bar.

  • Settings -> Privacy & Security -> Address Bar — Firefox Suggest:
    Browsing history
    Bookmarks
    Clipboard
    Open tabs
    Shortcuts
    Search engines

my firefox does not show the "Clipboard" option. Is there a different way to toggle that off?

What Firefox version do you use as clipboard got added in 125?

For older version this might be a problem with an extension or with the places.sqlite database that sores bookmarks and history.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use the "Places Database" -> "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support)

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox or reboot and retry.

I was on current release 125.0.3 - followed directions in another guide to install beta channel 126. Now I am stuck on 126 as my profile is not compatible with 125 anymore. Nightmare. 126 does not have clipboard but I unchecked a couple of the suggestion options and it seems stable so far. I will have to wait for 126 to be release channel so I can retain my open tabs etc. in my profile. I will update this ticket when I get release 126.

Thanks!

Firefox 126 is in release candidate stage and should be released next Tuesday (May 14).

They may have disabled clipboard remotely to address this issue, you can check this pref in about:config to verify.

  • about:config => browser.urlbar.suggest.clipboard => false

It was still on in the 126 beta. I turned it to false in about:config and firefox froze immediately. :( It seemed stable but when I pasted a short string into url bar it froze again.

1 facet that is potentially related: I have a remote desktop open to another machine and clipboard is turned on.

Another user mentioned remote desktop as a potential factor. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1446274#answer-1651618

If you disabled suggestions from the clipboard, that should fix the problem of Firefox freezing immediately when you click in the bar -- before pasting. It can't help with what happens after pasting.

It's possible that pasting in the address bar runs code to try to extract a clean URL, unlike pasting in other boxes. If so, that sounds like the same underlying problem as the suggestion scenario.

Still seeing freezes after pasting even with clipboard suggest off. URL bar is highlighted blue, but my copied text is not visible after ctrl + v.

I found windows key + v shows my clipboard history and lets me clear it, currently only short text entries are in the clipboard so probably not related to copying files or images.

Not sure what to explore next.

If you paste into a regular form (like the box I'm typing in now), do you ever encounter this kind of freeze?

no I have not seen this issue with forms, only on the URL / address bar.
