Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?

Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."

If not, see this:

I had to uninstall the Ask toolbar, not just uncheck it under Tools. Once I uninstalled it, the new windows tab worked.

solution of uninstalling ask tool bar (not just disabling it) was very helpful. it worked for me as well. in fact, i noticed too that the new-tabs problem started soon after ask toolbar had been installed since a few days after that, in an effort to fix the problem, i too had tried uninstalling/reinstalling firefox. thanks for your help...
