Are you sure that update offer isn't for 3.6.19, which was released last week specifically for Mac OSX?

Yes I am. have now downloaded 3.6.19 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html (rather hard to find, not listed in the 'blue info' at the lower end of the site info.
