Whether I am on a particular website, searching or playing games I keep getting the screen freezing and at the top bar it says "Not Responding" - this will clear on its own after about 10-15 seconds but then 5-10 minutes later it happens again!

It's been doing this for back in 6 and 7 never fixed it.

The default of the pref network.http.max-connections has been increased from 30 to 256 in Firefox 6+ versions.

Try to decrease the value of the pref network.http.max-connections from 256 to 30 as used in Firefox 3 versions.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

I had this same problem... I've un-installed(Control Panel\Programs and Features) all JAVA's(sort by name) and loaded JAVA 6.0. Firefox is back to normal again... (remember to change the settings in JAVA to not check for updates...) Hope this helps!
