firefox does not ask me if I want to save a password even though I have that setting selected

Firefox does not ask me if I want to save a password even though I have that setting selected; I even deleted the passwords thinking that might help and went back to the site, logged in, and it would not ask me to save it. I even downloaded another Firefox 9.0.1 and it still won't ask me. What's the fix?

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.

To see all History and Cookie settings, choose:

  • Firefox > Preferences > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"
