There is a block of bookmarks that repeat 5 times in my bookmarks menu
Firefox 10.0.2 - The Bookmarks Toolbar is OK, the Bookmarks Menu has a large block of bookmarks that repeat themselves 5 times, the Unsorted Bookmarks are OK.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

You can also try to repair the places database with this extension:
The Places DB not broken and has integrity, removed all duplicates, however the five repetitions still exist and the bookmarks cannot be sorted by name. So not cigar yet.
If the places-maintenance extension wasn't able to fix the problems then you need to remove all places files to force a rebuild of the places.sqlite database file as explained in the first two articles in my above post.
This problem seems to be more difficult than I suspected. Maybe the entries in the bookmarks actually exist 5 times over. They can individually be deleted. It cannot be sorted. Perhaps the import process caused this situation. My next experiment is to see if I ca individually import backed up bookmarks and folders. If so I will delete the sqlite files and force a rebuild. Then I will restore those that I care about.
