Recently when prompted to update Firefox, I got an error that stated that the software couldn't remove the old version because a file wouldn't let me uninstall it.

The file in question appears to be the crashreporter.app file. It looks like it's damaged or corrupted and lists it's size as zero KB. But I'm not sure how to get it to delete as it won't let me move that file to the trash.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop

  • Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
  • Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.

Try repairing permissions. You might find that you can delete the old version or replace it with the new one after that.
