The toolbars in my FF are stacked - how can I put them next to each other?

more options

I'm working with FF V25.0.

The bar with the FF symbol, the File/Edit.. bar, and the TAB of the current web page are stacked. I would like to put them all on one line - is that possible? I appreciate your comments. Best regards Henning

Chosen solution

I.E. supports being able to drag and move one toolbar into the empty space of another toolbar, both occupying the same level. This saves lots of space, particularly for small toolbars or ones in which only a few icons need to be visible. This would be a nice feature to emulate in Firefox. And for those of us who like the tabs directly above the web page, it would be nice to be able to use the space on the top level, next to the Firefox orange button, for toolbar buttons as well. Or can either of these be done currently? I'm using FF 26.0 Thanks,

You can drag many things around using Firefox's Customize feature, but I'm not sure you can get them all on the same line. Article on using the Customize feature: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.

Do you use the menus regularly? If not, you could try the compact two-column menu accessed with the orange Firefox button. See: Display the Firefox button menu instead of the menu toolbar. When you use this button and maximize the browser, the tabs move up into the title bar, which is another space savings.

Or, there is an add-on that will suppress the tab bar if there is only one page open. If you'd like to try that: Hide Tab Bar With One Tab. (I don't use it myself.)

Hi cj02139, I don't think you can move an entire toolbar onto another bar, but you often can move the controls from one bar onto another. This might not be possible with add-on toolbars. I assume you've tried moving them around in Customize mode. If it doesn't work, then, probably, it's not possible at this time. More on customizing: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.

Firefox has custom style rules for the tab bar that allow it to slide up into the title bar. It might be possible to create similar style rules for one of the other bars and apply them using either a userChrome.css file or the Stylish extension. It sounds a little too complicated for a Sunday morning project...

You can submit feature suggestions two ways:

  • Help > Submit Feedback
  • file a "bug"

However, Firefox 29 is expected to bring substantial user interface changes, code named "Australis". UI and toolbar suggestions probably should be related to that context since the current UI's days are numbered.
