Just randomly crashes - we tried all the recommendations and nothing seems to help: updating add-ons; drivers; windows; opening in safe mode did not help; do not have that "bit??" program;
One way that it always consistently crashes is when trying to download the add-on Hebrew Calendar - it starts to download and always crashes within seconds after and before it finishes the download.

Chosen solution

I went to options -> sync and unchecked add-ons - hasn't crashed since. So at least for now it seems that was the problem - thank you.

The first ten crashes on the list all have the same "signature" meaning it's very likely they are all caused by the same problem. However, I don't recognize it, and it is not linked to any bug reports at present. The only useful information I found on the crash-stats site are two earlier comments saying it was caused by trying to install the Hebrew Calendar extension. So... definitely give up on that extension, and see whether you can associate new crashes with anything else.

This looks like a problem with reading JAR files (ZIP archives) used by extensions and internal Firefox code.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.

Thank you - yes, that one was clear. I kept trying because I have Firefox with that add-on and no problems on two other computers - a desktop running Windows 8.1, and another laptop running Windows 7. Another clue - when I go to View -> toolbars the "tabs on top" option doesn't show up like it does on the other computers using Firefox. Sometimes it just crashes when I'm not even using it and it's just running in the background. I'll be home this evening and can try to send you some of those other crashes if that would help. Thank you so much for helping with this.

I tried starting in Safe Mode and it still crashed. Should I skip this and just try creating the new profile? If so, I'll also try that tonight when I get back. Thank you.

Firefox 25.01

This is a continuation of the last crashing problem a few months back.

This recnet one started when I allowed two Adobe update on 11-12-13 and suddenly Firefox started to crash even with blue screen.

Things I have found this one I did not try is to disbale flash http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OAF15RNiyE

My steps

1/ Click on Run and type in uninstal a program, click on sort so lattest updates are showing up top. Delete Adobe both parts on 11-12-13

2/ Click on run and type in Restore, pick restore to a earlier date. I should have done this first than step one above and restore to the 10th or what shows on your list just before the updates of Adobe. I did this in the last Firefox and this seemed to fix the problem.

3/ Disable Adobe updater http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/disable-automatic-updates-acrobat-reader.html

I just updated to Firefox 26 so lets see what happens. From now I try to put one update on one at a time.

One nice trick I found but was not able to use was click on Taskbar, then right click and click on Taskbar Manager and see what program caused the problem provided one did not get the blue screen

Hi condor17, Flash crashes are a different problem than the original poster is having in this thread.

Blue screen crashes commonly relate to a device driver incompatibility, particularly graphics card drivers. One of the first things to try for that, if driver updates or rollbacks do not solve the problem, is to disable Firefox's use of hardware acceleration, and also the Flash plugin's use of hardware acceleration.

But please start a new thread to discuss that further. See:

I just tried again and here is the crash report - I wasn't doing anything at all with Firefox - it was just sitting open: bp-cbf4dbdf-41a6-4683-9809-8285b2131212 12/13/2013 5:33 PM

I've tried everything - I then uninstalled FireFox and then downloaded and re-installed and synced with may account. Same thing keeps happening for no apparent reason, sometimes when FireFox is doing nothing and just sitting there. Here are the most recent crashes. PLEASE, this is terrible - I love Firefox, and have been thrilled to exclusively use it on my desktop (which I just upgraded to a new one and Windows 8.1) and my previous laptop (Windows 7 - same as this one) with no problems - it's great. Why doesn't it work on my new Windows 7 laptop? ALSO - under the View --> Toolbars menu item the "Tabs on top" option does not show at all as it does on my desktop and other laptop. Why would that be?

AND - here are the two most recent crashes which occurred while I was trying to post this: bp-20ac1d7f-3923-47a7-8e84-d6a802131212 12/13/2013 6:55 PM bp-4aca53da-df59-4630-a4ed-7d80f2131212 12/13/2013 6:52 PM

Please, please - can somebody help so I can get on with just using FireFox. Thank you.

I wonder whether Firefox was trying to install an update to one of your existing extensions?

Edit: The reason I suggest this is that these errors all seem to related to reading the manifest file in an extension. However, the speed of the error suggests that Firefox has this file already downloaded somewhere (maybe in an update folder?) and is repeatedly choking on it.

That sure makes sense - and might also explain why it crashes whenever I try to download/install that Hebrew Calendar add-on - it starts to download and then sometimes sooner and sometimes later just crashes, perhaps when it has downloaded but then started to install. So, if that is the case, what do I do?

more options

It is possible that your security (anti-virus) software is trying to scan the file or even extracts all files in the archive and rebuild the archive and doesn't do this properly.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

more options

It isn't the security/anti-virus software - I didn't have any on this new computer when I first downloaded and installed Firefox 26 and it started crashing right away. Then I added security/anti-virus software - tried your suggestion and it didn't help.

I think jscher2000 might be on the right track - waiting to hear back from him what to do about his latest idea.

I don't know where Firefox stashes pending updates for extensions. I am aware of a folder here that I think is used for program updates:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Mozilla\updates\

For updates that Firefox tries downloading again, I think you would need to remove an extension to prevent issues caused by those.

more options

I couldn't find that update file - but I tried deleting every extension I could - still crashed. Also unlinked this computer from my sync account thinking maybe the syncing was affecting it, but that didn't help either. I'd really hate to stop using FireFox - it still works great on my other laptop and on my desktop. I'd really like to try fixing this somehow. Can't understand why this is happening when it's exactly the same on the other two computers (including the same laptop, just older version, with Windows 7) and those work perfectly.

more options

How about these most recent crashes - I think one was when I unlinked from synced, and the last one or two was when I re-linked - actually I think the last two were actually after I re-linked to the sync account while it was syncing for the first time and then at the end of syncing.

Hi Rebbetzin, it's been a while since a new profile was suggested as a test and I'm not sure whether you tried that before.

A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.

Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):

firefox.exe -P

Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.

You'll click the Create Profile button. I recommend using the default location suggested, and to avoid data loss, not re-using any existing folder. Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.

If Firefox stable in the new profile? (I know it can be hard to test without your regular bookmarks or any history to revisit...)

When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.

Boy am I confused now. I created a new profile and it seemed to be stable. But how can you really tell without all the bookmarks/tabs/etc. - so first I tried to download that add-on "Hebrew Calendar" which had downloaded successfully many times with no problem on my other computers running FireFox - and it crashed. So, I started all over again with the new profile - and then paired/synced - and towards the end of the first sync download it crashed. But when I restarted in that same profile it appears that everything had in fact downloaded successfully - bookmarks / add-ons / etc. Now I'm confused. And what made it worse is that when I went to "Tabs from other devices" it showed my desktop, laptop (old one), and then this new one four times - identical ID but of course with different tabs open. How do you delete the duplicated computer? And it might have been the wrong thing to do but I then just deleted the new profile and am back using the old/default profile I started with in the first place. And we seem to be stable - for the moment. So then I hit the "sync now" and sure enough it started syncing for a while (the blue color circling in the circled arrows icon) but then after a while it crashed. Sounds like the problem might be the syncing? You seem to be an expert at FireFox - any thoughts on that?

I don't use Sync or know much about it.

It sounds as though Firefox is trying to sync over an extension that at least on this one system it is allergic to.
