If you want to restore the previously used standalone window to manage search engines then you can toggle this pref to false with a middle-click on the about:config page.

  • about:config page: browser.search.showOneOffButtons = false

Close and restart Firefox to the change effective.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you don't like the new search box. I'm assuming that you're talking about the extra buttons now that allow you to search Wikipedia/Twitter etc.?

If so, here's how to remove the extra options.

How to manage Search Engines in Firefox

You'll want to read the last section - Hide search engines

If this is not what you meant, please let me know.

That page does not exist. The correct link is Search bar - add, change and manage search engines on Firefox - see if anything in that article is helpful ... for example, if the problem is search suggestions then yoiu can turn those off. See the section Turn search suggestions on or off

What do you mean by "MY search"? http://www.mysearch.com or "mywebsearch" or something else? If you want to always use an alternate search engine without having to click its "one-click" icon at the bottom of the Search bar drop-down box, then you can set it as the default search engine in Firefox Options -> Search panel.

As for the drop-down box itself, you can minimize what's shown there by turning off search suggestions and hiding the alternate search engines you don't use, as explained in the Search bar - add, change and manage search engines on Firefox article.

Forget my last reply. I see you already used the solution that cor-el provided.

I'm not a very technical user but love my Firefox browser.

I want to eliminate the annoying drop down search bar and just keep it visible all the time. Can someone please provide me the step by step procedure to do this please? Every time I move my mouse a little to high in the screen the bar keeps dropping down hiding access to the application menu bar........................sooooooooooooo annoying!!!

Close and restart Firefox to the change effective.

For the record, there's a plan to remove this preference in a future Firefox version. Here's the bug report (read Bugzilla Etiquette before commenting in bug reports)
