When I open Firefox preferences, the only tab that opens is GENERAL. All the others (Tabs, Search, Content, Applications, Privacy, Security, Sync and Advanced do not open. The window is too small to view any of the content, "maximize" does not work, and the window cannot be resized.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Everything was fine until immediately after the upgrade to Firefox 36 -- which I did when I kept getting messages that an upgrade would improve performance. It has NOT improved performance, it is causing me unending frustration. I think the problem may be something to do with my add-on "Theme Font & Size Changer LightWeightTheme". All I want to do is change the type of font and size of font on my webpages. This should not be rocket science. Why is it so difficult???? I am a regular user and do not have the inclination or ability to start monkeying around in Safe Mode.

You can use the NoSquint extension to set font size (text/page zoom) and text color on web pages.

If you used the Theme Font & Size Changer extension to set a default zoom then you change the layout.css.devPixelsPerPx pref that affects all elements in the browser (user interface and web pages).

Have you tried using the zoom controls?

You may have a corrupt xulstore.json file. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/changes-toolbars-and-window-sizes-are-not-saved

I installed No Squint, but all it does is change the size of the font. This is easily accomplished without any add-ons at all (by using the plus or minus sign with the command key). What I am trying to do is change the font on webpages - from Times Roman to Helvetica. But this seems an impossible task.

I am grateful for your help but it amuses me that whenever something goes wrong immediately following an upgrade, I am told I must have corrupt files. Could the problem not be with the upgrade itself? In future I will wait until all the bugs are ironed out and considerable time has passed before installing a new Firefox version.

You can set text and background colors in the Options/Preferences of NoScript via "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions".

You can alter the size and colour of the text, yes, but......... you cannot change the FONT!
