Why doesn't editing userChrome.css work for me?

I originally had the same problem as here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1085113 . The offered solution was to edit the userChrome.css file. So I created this file (into a folder named chrome) in my profile folder, copied and pasted the suggested code into it, saved the file, and restarted firefox. This had no effect at all. Then I tried some of the examples given in http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome-example.css and http://www-archive.mozilla.org/unix/customizing.html , again to no effect. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Did you check the file type of the userChrome.css file to make sure that it is a CSS file and not a text file?

Just to be sure, you can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Ah, that seems to be the case. Thank you! The sites I consulted simply said "a plain text document", so I didn't think much further. How do I convert my text file to a css file? Does this require any special software? "Save as" doesn't seem to work.

EDIT: Ok, I found out how that works. (Needed to change names in a different order.) Problem solved :-)
