Thunderbird on Mac OS X - how to stop blue spinning wheel on every folder change

I've migrated over from Windows 7 to OS X 10.11.14 and there seems to be a terrible lag with TB. Every time I switch a folder, I see a blue wheel spinning and it takes a few seconds to respond.

I've tried using my historical profile (8GB) and a brand new profile, no difference. Same blue wheel/ball spinning every time I switch folders (within same or between different accounts).

I've found one suggestion online about this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7278124?start=0&tstart=0 but it does seem to work for me.

Any advice? After a decade using TB, am I going to have to change??

David,

Did you try safe mode?

Hi Wayne, thanks for the response!

I did try safe mode. I even tried creating an entirely fresh profile - no add-ons, no data, etc... same story.
