I have been using thunderbird in conjunction with my @windstream account for years with no problems but recently when i send an email from thunderbird it fails to save the message to windstream. my setting had not changed to my knowledge so I tried deleting the account and recreating with the same result. This windstream account works fine when i send email from my android phone the messages save to windstream account.

Check your windstream settings here: You can check here for IMAP and SMTP settings for Windstream: https://www.windstream.com/Support/Hosted-Email-Setup---Thunderbird/

You can configure Thunderbird and tell it where to save sent messages by going to the menu with Alt or F10 then choose Tools > Account Settings > [your windstream account] > Copies & Folders. Check "Plac a copy in" and choose the right folder…
