pop up blocker with bookmarklet

more options

Hello, We run a website that uses a bookmarklet button which allows us to capture the current URL location and save it. This is placed on the Tool Bar where its easy for a user to use. Until now, its been working perfectly but with this latest update to FireFox we are seeing the pop-up blocking being activated with the yellow message bar at the top. Now this would be ok if we only had to allow the pop up once (by clicking allow site), but unfortunately the bookmarket button has to be able to work on all sites, which is the whole point of the button. So its impractical to keep allowing it every time its used. Disabling the pop-up blocker completely then works, but then the browser is open to other pop-ups. Is there any way to allow bookmarklets to display a pop up and not display a pop-up message? Without having to disable the entire pop-up functionality. Can the FF developers allow for user placed bookmarklets to not be pop-up blocked. Maybe an exception added for that. They are placed manually by the user so are allowed by the user only.

Thanks for reading. Paul.

The fix has been added to Firefox 86 beta 5, and Firefox 86 should release the week of Feb. 23rd.

Just to add, i have found references this problem happening in the past with FireFox. Back then, it was regarded as a bug, which was later fixed. Could this also be a bug? I think its possible.

Thanks Paul.

I have a bookmarklet which activates the yellow message on Facebook. I wait (i.e. don't click either button) and it goes away.

Well the Firefox popup blocker i see (yellow banner across the top, with one button named "Options") does not go away after time. And the bookmarklet activated popup never appears.

This only started with release 85.0 Which updated just the other day. So the problem is with this very latest release. Now seeing this on multiple computers as the update gets applied. So its getting worse.

Can someone look at this, report it as a bug or whatever. The way i understand this is, it should be allowed and not blocked because its coming from a user driven event (button click) and therefor should be trusted. But its not happening.

Paul.

The setting to block pop up windows is on the Privacy & Security page of Options/Preferences. Alongside the setting is a button labelled 'Exceptions'. Your best course seems to be to add your website as an exception.

Hi Paul, bookmarklets run in the context of the website rather than a privileged context, so they often are subject to the rules of what websites are allowed to do. However, there are some exceptions so it's worth filing a bug report. I may do that; if so, I'll post a link to the report.

Hi terauck. The problem with that as i mentioned before is our bookmarklet works with any site you visit. So it would be impractical to have to allow every site to the exceptions list, its not just our site. The bookmarklet sits on the Toolbar and users click on it, no matter what page they are visiting. This used to work fine, but it changed in v85.

Hi jscher2000, thats great. Thank you very much for taking the time to file a bug report. I will be keeping an eye on that link.

I see another user on redit also mentions this problem. And from what i gather in the bug post, it could well be an actual bug. Fingers crossed it gets resolved.

I'm not that clear how FF rules are being applied to a bookmarklet click (from the Toolbar), but i would have thought it should be allowed?. Having been placed there by the user manually and only clickable by the user, it seems its already passed a privilege check.

Thanks jscher.

Can you give an example of a non-working bookmarklet?
