The Stop Loading and Reload icons for the navigation bar, the red X and the curved arrow as in Firefox3, did not appear in Firefox4 and they are not among the choices in the Customize Toolbar window. How do I get these back?

Firefox 4.0 has a combined Go/Reload/Stop button that is positioned at the far right of the location bar.

  • During the page load process it shows as a Stop button and after the loading has finished the button is changed to a Reload button. If you type in the location bar then that button becomes a Go button.
  • You can middle-click that button to duplicate the current tab to a new tab.
  • In Firefox 4.0 you can move the Stop/Reload button out of the location bar and put them wherever you want on the toolbar. You can also make them appear as separate buttons on the toolbar.
    • Open the "View > Toolbars > Customize" window to move them out of the location bar.
    • Swap the two buttons or move them to their previous position at the left of the location bar.
    • If the order is "Reload - Stop" to get a combined "Reload/Stop" button.
    • Swap the order to "Stop - Reload" or separate them otherwise to get two distinct buttons.

You need to update the following plugins:

  • Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 11.0
  • Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape "9.4.2"
  1. Check your plugin versions on either of the following links':
  2. Update Shockwave for Director
    • NOTE: this is not the same as Shockwave Flash; this installs the Shockwave Player.
    • Use Firefox to download and SAVE the installer to your hard drive from the link in the article below (Desktop is a good place so you can find it).
    • When the download is complete, exit Firefox (File > Exit)
    • locate and double-click in the installer you just downloaded, let the install complete.
    • Restart Firefox and check your plugins again.
    • Download link and more information: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Using+the+Shockwave+plugin+with+Firefox
  3. Update Adobe Reader (PDF plugin):
    • From within your existing Adobe Reader (if you have it already installed):
      • Open the Adobe Reader program from your Programs list
      • Click Help > Check for Updates
      • Follow the prompts for updating
      • If this method works for you, skip the "Download complete installer" section below and proceed to "After the installation" below
    • Download complete installer (if you do NOT have Adobe Reader installed):
    • After the installation, start Firefox and check your version again.
