My work computer which runs Windows XP Pro with Service pack 3 and beyond was updated to FF Ver. 20.01 this afternoon and finds itself "unable to connect". It was working fine on the previous version minutes before it was updated! Nothing has changed in my network connections and my firewall settings! I am writing this on a Windows 7 notebook computer which is running FF Ver. 20.02 which is running fine! I have another Windows XP Pro computer which is running FF Ver, 19.02 and There is a "Software Update" Window on it's screen asking me to update that computer to FF Ver. 20.01. I have clicked "Ask later" in fear that it will have the same "Unable to Connect" problem!. Help!

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

The problem was solved! Thank you Cor-el!

I thought that it was either Tiny Firewall which I use on all of my computers or it was Norton Security Center on the subject computer that was causing the problem because in addition to not being able to get Firefox Ver. 20.01 to work, I could not ping the subject computer from any of the other computers on my home network. I removed Tiny Firewall which did not solve the problem. I then uninstalled Norton Security Center and then Firefox Ver. 20.01 worked and I was able to ping the subject computer from my other computers on my network! Great! Thank you!

I would like to choose, when I want the plugin-container to connect, as I pay for Gb consumed (3g connection), I keep updating my programs when I link to another friend wifi connection.

As we all like "control" and we all do not like that a program keeps connecting when we do not want it to connect (as google update does for example), It would not be that rude if Firefox allowed to us to choose whether we want to have unexpected connection updates via plugin-container or not, and keep if disabled in case no decision is made by the user.

It is nasty to be forced to use the firewall all the time to forbid Firefox to do anything without my permission, without even asking.
