I was advised to fix Firefox by getting upgrade free to address security issues. Did it work?

Firefox says to go to menu bar and select About Firefox. That protocol does not work on my Windows 7 Dell Computer. Why? I got Firefox to upgrade me to latest but don't see a path that says it was successful or not.

Am concerned that Firefox setting is automatic upgrade but when clicking on it it says I was using an older version. How does this all make sense then?

I need help.

You are running the latest version of Firefox, 46. You can verify that updates are working by reading Update Firefox to the latest release
