In Firefox 57, there are no configuration options nor extensions which allow for hitting enter (not alt-enter) in the URL Bar to open the URL in a new tab the way that alt-enter does. I previously had this functionality via the legacy TabMix Plus extension. This should work the same way as the browser.search.openintab configuration option except for the urlbar.

Hello! Click on the cog and hide all except for that search bar, I believe in functions like the URL Bar.

It is not possible to remove the URL Bar from the UI, however you can embed the search functionality into the URL bar. When doing this, even search functionality does not obey the browser.search.openintab config option and instead loads into the currently focused tab.
