My Windows XP desktop computer died on me, but I have a copy of the bookmarkbackups file folder. How do I use this to get my bookmarks into my new Windows 10 desktop computer?

Hi SueJohnson, you can "restore" one of the backup files from that folder into your new Firefox. This article has the steps. When you get to the Restore menu, use "Choose File" to point Firefox to where it an access your old bookmarkbackups folder.

Hmm, no error messages? Could you open the "Browser Console" and try the Restore again and see whether any messages show up there? Here's how:

Use one of these methods:

  • (Windows) Ctrl+Shift+j
  • "3-bar" menu button > Web Developer > Browser Console
  • (menu bar) Tools > Web Developer > Browser Console

That will launch a new window and display some messages. Click the trash can icon at upper left of the console to clear the clutter, then switch over to the Library window and try Restore again. Do any messages that could be related to the Restore appear in the console?

Actually your first suggestion DID work. I was used to the way the bookmarks showed on Windows XP and didn't click on the Bookmarks menu where my bookmarks did show up. THANK YOU so much !!!

Oh, I forgot to mention some interface layout things.

If you would like the top menu bar (File, Edit, View...) to be visible all the time, you can use the toolbars list to turn it on. To show that list, use any of these methods:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank spot on the tab bar (or right-click the "+" button)
  • (menu bar) View > Toolbars
On Windows, tap the Alt key to activate the menu bar temporarily.
  • in Customize mode > Toolbars button (see: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars)

To turn on the Menu Bar, Bookmarks Toolbar, or other bars, click it on the list.

There also is an optional bookmarks menu button () you can add to the main toolbar. Two options for doing that. Either:

(A) Use the Customize panel (Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars) to drag the icon to the desired spot on the toolbar

(B) Use the method from Bookmarks in Firefox - section entitled: How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?

  • Click the "Library" button:
  • Click "Bookmarks"
  • Click "Bookmarking Tools"
  • Click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"
