I believe I followed all the instructions listed here under "Thunderbird Help" regarding Moving Thunderbird Data to a New Computer.

I plugged in a 1TB external HD and followed all 14 bullet points moving Tbird data to the external hd.

I am no closer to making room on my laptop hard drive than I was before I bought the hd. Now I have moved a bunch of Thunderbird stuff onto it and I haven't a clue how to make more room on my laptop hard drive by moving Thunderbird local folders (which is what I need help doing) from it to my external HD.

I must make more room. If nobody from the Community can assist me, I shall have to delete my precious saved emails in order to continue using this almost full laptop. Again, I believe I followed instructions. They made no sense, but I followed them anyhow and here we are. I need more help than ever.

Thank you all. JL

Simples.

Copy the existing profile data to a sub folder on the external HD Invoke the about:profile in troubleshooting information, or the profile manager. I discuss both a little here. https://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com/2019/09/i-lost-my-profilemail-on-update-to.html

Create a new profile using the new profile wizard and point it to the copy of your Thunderbird profile you have created on the HD (program thinks it is a new profile, but if it points to existing data it just uses what is in the folder, it does not delete everything to make it new) Make this new profile your "default" (use it next time I think the wizard asks. Restart Thunderbird

Go to help troubleshooting information and click the show profile button does it open windows file manager on your new location? If so you have made the change and can not use about profiles to "manage" your old prpfile, remove it is obviously the next step after oyu have verified the success of the change.

I would also recommend

1. installing something like treesizefree to find were most of your disk is being used, and ruthlessly clean it up

2. see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/imap-synchronization#w_disk-space-usage
