"Secure Connection Failed" https//www.Merriam-Webster.com Windows 8.1
Latest update issue? Windows 8.1 here. Not able to access www.merriam-webster.com site from Firefox, Chrome, nor Internet Explorer with Ethernet connection nor WIFI. I can access the site from my Windows 10 laptop running Firefox. Also have had issues with other sites, but was able to resolve by clicking the appropriate button. Sorry I can't describe this better in a more technical manner.

There is security software like Avast, Kaspersky, BitDefender and ESET that intercept secure connection certificates and send their own.

I see this in "Tools -> Page Info -> Security" (screenshot).
You can check the connection settings.
- Settings -> General -> Network: Connection -> Settings
If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support to see if that has effect.
