Excess memory usage by Thunderbird 128 on Mac OS 14.6.1

Start Thunderbird and it uses about 1.6 gb memory. A day or two later system is out of memory (16 gb ram). Thunderbird is using 80 gb memory. All other running programs are using usual amount. Force quit Thunderbird and restart it. Cycle repeats etc.
