WidevineCdm Plugin Crash on Firefox

more options

I'm unable to stream content on Spotify and Netflix in Firefox due to a recurring "WidevineCdm plugin has crashed" error. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Steps I've already taken to troubleshoot:

  • Ensured "Play DRM-restricted content" is enabled in Firefox.
  • Tested with a completely clean Firefox profile.
  • Tried the portable version of Firefox (131.0.3) as well, but the same issue arose.
  • Verified that streaming works fine on Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, so I don't think it's an issue with my PC or security software (I temporarily disabled it for testing purposes).
  • Made sure I'm not using any VPN or proxy.
  • Performed a clean reinstall of the latest Firefox version.

System information:

  • OS: Windows 11 (23H2)
  • Firefox version: 132.0

I ran "sfc /scannow" just in case, but the result was "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations," so it doesn’t seem like any Windows system files are corrupted. I suspected this was unlikely anyway, since I only recently bought this PC.

I also tried checking the crash report via "about:crashes," but it's a bit too technical for me to fully understand. It says "MOZ_CRASH Reason: Cannot load plugin as library -5977 4581," so I suspect it's failing to load the plugin. I did confirm that "widevinecdm.dll" itself is installed correctly.
