Running xp pro (up to date on updates) if I leave firefox open for a while, then shut it down and later start it up I am told it is already running, looking at processes shows the process is indeed still showing with over 170M of memory usage (excessive). Nothing odd was open, no adobe etc (adobe X is a whole 'nother issue )

I have the same problem (Firefox got up to a staggering 1.3GB of RAM!). Well, I've managed to "fix" it (until it is fixed in Firefox itself) by a RAM optimizer.

I use Smart RAM, which is a small but great tool from the Utilities section in Advanced SystemCare, which got Firefox down to only 20MB of RAM.
