How to update Firefox on a Mac using OS X for a new Mac user?

I am a new Mac user, so this is inexperience talking as much as anything else. I have Firefox set to automatically update itself, and I keep getting this window that appears to drag the Firefox icon into the Applications folder. I have dragged it over there, but Firefox still isn't updating. When I try clicking on the Firefox icons in the Applications folder, they simply either download again or they are document files. What do I do to get Firefox to update itself on my Mac?

Sorry, I should have posted that I did try that as well. It said to go to the main Firefox page for updates, and I downloaded the update from the main page. Same thing happened. I get the prompt to drag the Firefox icon to the applications folder - and nothing happens. Firefox does not update.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

  • Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
  • Install the new version that you have downloaded
