happens whenever I try to use "send link" in file menu. Started after I downloaded Baylon search tool inadvertently. Uninstalled Babylon. Eliminated residual Baylon presence in c/program files/mozilla/extentions. Nevertheless problem continues. Prevents me from sending web links to others.

You can open the about:config page via the location bar and do a search for babylon via the Filter at the top of the about:config page.
You can reset all babylon related prefs that appear bold (user set) via the right-click context menu to their default values.

You can also check the mailto setting in Tools > Options > Applications
