When I select 'accept third party cookies', the default choice on the next line, which is greyed out, reads 'I close Firefox', how can I make this area active?

This problem is with Firefox 16.0.2 on an HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook with Windows 7. I also have an HP Pavilion a6110n desktop computer running Firefox 16.0.2 on Windows Vista which has this area active so that I can select 'ask me every time'. I also have an HP Compaq Presario R4000 laptop running Firefox 16.0.1 on WinXP which also has this 'keep until' area active. While I have been writing this the Presario updated itself to Firefox 16.0.2 and the 'keep until' area is still active and still says,'ask me every time’. All three computers have the, 'Firefox will:' area set to, 'use custom settings for history’. What do I need to do to make this section active on the dv7 Notebook? Thanks. Jim

Thanks for your help. The problem went away when I unchecked, "Always use private browsing mode". I hadn't made a full comparison with the other two computers which are working the way I want them to. Now everything's cool. Thanks. Jim

Hi,

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

This is the consequence of running Firefox in Private Browsing mode.
In PB mode all cookies are session cookies that when you close Firefox, so you can't change that setting.

  • Tools > Options > Privacy: Use custom settings for history
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"
