Ever since a couple of weeks ago, I've been having trouble playing Flash videos on YouTube, etc. in Firefox. They often freeze on the first frame of the video while the audio still plays. Sometimes the video starts playing normally, but then freezes. I cleared the cache and I have the latest version of Flash. I don't have this problem in Chrome or Safari, just Firefox.

Thanks for your help!

Chosen solution

As other troubleshooting methods try

  1. In Windows SafeMode (From F8 @ startup) with Network Support.
That will stop interference from some other programs
  2. Playing a downloaded video that is on your computer.
    That rules out network/internet problems.
  3. With a new additional Firefox profile.
Unlikely, but something in your profile may be a problem
Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles

Please as a troubleshooting step try in safe mode and with all plugins except FlashPlayer disabled.

That should improve things and we can attempt next to narrow down the reason for the problem.

Note that you do have a lot of extension installed and enabled.

If you use extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) that can block content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Flash Block, Ghostery) then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.

  • If you have many extensions then first enable half of the extensions to test which half has the problem.
  • Continue to divide the bad half that still has the issue until you find which one is causing it.

I just tried starting in Safe Mode with all addons and plugins except Flash disabled, but I still have this problem...>_<

Making a new profile fixed it, thanks!

Great and thanks for posting back.

You may need to make a different more permenant profile and observe a few precautions (Suggestions may be relaxed once you understand how to create and use profiles manually without using profle-manager, until then play safe)

CARE

  • Always make new profiles in empty folders & do not nest within other profiles
Because taking out the profile will otherwise delete information.
  • Do not rename or delete profiles once created. Just delete any shortcuts, to the unwanted profile.
Renaming does not rename the folder and things soon get confusing.
  • Probably wise to backup profiles

At a minimum you will probably want passwords and bookmarks back. Although maybe you wish to keep running in future, from the same OS account, but with a choice of profiles each with different passwords and bookmarks.
