Did you try to start in Safe Mode to see if that happens when using Safe Mode? Usually that problem your seeing is result of Malware infections that is opening pages for it to do it's dirty work. So until you start in Safe Mode to see if the problems shows up there we won't know what is going on.

What kind of content does the link try to load? The reason I ask that is explained in this article, about how when Firefox is unable to handle some kinds of downloads, setting Firefox to open them anyway causes: Firefox repeatedly opens empty tabs or windows after you click on a link.

You can rename/remove handlers.json and if present delete mimeTypes.rdf in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed to reset all file actions.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
