I believe this is a bug. Sometimes after an auto s/w update, when opening a pdf file, it instead saves file as a download. I then have to go into Tool >Options>General>Applications>Portable Application Document (PDF)> Use Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (default), and change if back to opening the file to read it.

One of the mysteries only the Software Engineers at Mozilla know.

The setting sticks for you with the current FF, yes?

This probably means that handlers.json in the profile folder gets corrupted for some reason.

Does only this setting gets affected by updating?

Files shouldn't get modified or corrupted by an update.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:preferences page.

This has been happening sporadically over the last year or so. And no other settings get changed. I can cope with it, but finally decided to report it as an annoying bug.
