Both Firefox and Firefox Developer edition refuse to play audio
Firefox will not play any type of audio. There's no indication of audio being played in Firefox in the soundmixer either. Audio works perfectly fine in all other applications. Steps I've already taken to try and solve the issue:
- Reinstall audio drivers - Remove cache, cookies and browser history - Refresh Firefox (remove addons / reset settings) - Reinstall Firefox - Rebooting system in between those steps
I've made sure my audio devise is set as default obviously.

It seems this solved the problem for me:
Go to options -> Privacy & Security -> Firefox Data Collection and Use -> Turn off: Allow Firefox to install and run studies
Gonna check for a day or 2 and see if it stays solved. If so, will mark this as the solution.

Here is a screenshot of Chrome and Firefox both playing a random Youtube video at the same time. You can clearly see Chrome sending audio output as expected, but Firefox does not.

I have the exact same problem. From YouTube to Bandcamp.
It started right after it updated from 67.0.4.
I can't imagine it having anything to do with my computer updating itself, even though that happened before I opened/updated Firefox. Also, videos take a few seconds longer to start playing than normal. And audio (e.g. Soundcloud) never starts playing at all.
However, none of this happens on the Firefox app for Android, or even using my phones default browser. Which seems odd to me, since when not using the app, you're just on the site as usual.
Ah, and I'm also unable to change how many processes of Firefox are running at once. As you can see, even with the Content Process Limit set to 1, there are still 4 processes running. I don't know if I can do something in config to fix this.

You can check the Web Console for media related messages.
- "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Web Developer

The console does not return any errors or audio related messages. I've also checked all the articles you've mentioned (even before I made this post). There's no useful information in there that helped unfortunately.

Sadly, as bjorno43 said, none of the information there was helpful. However... it has been resolved! Suddenly, all of the video and audio is working as it should again.

Strangely enough, exactly the same happened to me. I opened up a Twitch livestream and all my sound was suddenly returned. I have no idea how this happened though.

Aaaaand now it's doing it again>:( I really hope this gets resolved soon.
Yup. It stopped working for me as well. I think it's clear by now that this is some kind of bug / update going on here. Otherwise this wouldn't happen to the both of us at the exact same time.

Sadly, this was ineffective for me. Closed and reopened afterward too, but still nothing. I clicked View Firefox studies just to see what it meant. Apparently, they are making changes, and testing whether those changes cause problems for users or not. I wonder which change(s) caused or is causing this (and other problems) to happen?
Maybe you just happened to turn it off right as it was fixed? Was it fixed immediately? Do your Completed Studies match mine?

Well, it seems to be fixed again for me. I closed Firefox for a bit, then turned off studies after everything came back. I am now questioning whether or not this is what the problem really is. Because it seems most times I close/reopen Firefox, it happens. Is this the case for you?

Both restarting Firefox and my entire computer currently doesn't seem to cause any issues for me. As for my completed studies, it shows absolutely nothing. Perhaps they were removed after I reinstalled Firefox earlier to see if that solved the issue. I don't know.
Hmm, I see. As for the studies, they probably were removed, as they would still be there otherwise. It would seem however, that this is a problem outside of our control as users:p
