A good example is https://www.theolympian.com/.

Please note that I don't want to stop being able to hover over videos and play them while hovering over them! I tried disabling autoplay in about:config and ended up disabling playing videos while hovering over them.

Looking at the website that you have provided as an example, Firefox does block the videos that are playing sound. The problem is that the videos on the website are set by the website so that they start muted. Therefore, since they aren't emitting any sound, Firefox doesn't block them.

You can set Firefox to block muted videos in the about:config, but it will have the unwanted effect of also blocking features like the hover preview that you've already described.

What you could do is allow Firefox to autoplay videos on all websites and then add the ones that you want to block to the exception list.

More information about adding a website to the exception list can be found in the Allow or block media autoplay in Firefox article.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for trying but I don't understand what you mean since there's no option on the page you referred to for adding an exception website, only an option after clicking the i icon on the address bar to allow or block autoplay sound videos.

I have Autoplay Sound already blocked in Options and these videos play anyway and it's pretty damned annoying.

The "Tools -> Page Info -> Permissions" page has a "Autoplay sound" checkbox.

Thanks again Wesley, this is one of the reasons why I have a love/hate relationship with Firefox. Cheers!

Thanks for trying cor-el but Wesley checked the website and their videos start muted, which is why they play (and annoy the hell out of me!).

He pointed out that I could change about:config autoplay settings but that would interfere with my ability to play snippets of videos on other sites by hovering over the videos with my cursor.

  • sigh* There is no love for Firefox users!
